FAQ
Answers to the questions that come up before and during checkout. Read this before you order and it'll save you time.
During checkout
What should I enter for Hostname?
Your hostname is a human-readable name for your server. It doesn't need to be a real domain. You can use something like 'mycompany-vps' or 'server01'. If you do have a domain pointed at the server, you can use that (e.g. 'vps.mycompany.co.za'). You can change it later.
What is the Nameserver Prefix?
This is only relevant if you're running DNS services on your VPS. If you're not sure, you can enter 'ns' or 'ns1' as a default. Most users hosting applications or using Windows for accounting software won't need to touch this at all.
What password should I set?
This is the administrator (or root) password for your server. Use a strong, unique password: at least 12 characters with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. You'll use this to log in via RDP (Remote Desktop) on Windows. Store it somewhere safe, as we don't keep a copy.
Which billing cycle should I choose?
Monthly is the most flexible. There's no lock-in and you can cancel or upgrade at any time. If you know you'll be using the server long-term, some billing cycles may offer a discount; check the options at checkout.
Getting connected
How do I connect to my Windows VPS?
Use Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). On Windows, search for 'Remote Desktop Connection' and enter your server's IP address. On Mac, download Microsoft Remote Desktop from the App Store. Use the IP, username (Administrator), and the password you set during checkout.
When will my server be ready?
Most VPS plans are provisioned within a few minutes to a few hours of payment being confirmed. You'll receive an email from WHMCS with your server's IP address and login details once it's ready.
Can I get Linux instead of Windows?
Yes, on unmanaged plans. Linux is available on request. Mention it in your order notes or contact support after ordering and we'll configure your server with a Linux distribution of your choice.
Backups and security
What does Veeam backup actually cover?
Veeam creates full VM-level snapshots of your server on a scheduled basis. If something goes wrong (a failed update, accidental deletion, or a ransomware incident) we can restore your server to a previous point. The backup size matches your storage tier (e.g., a 200 GB NVMe plan gets 200 GB Veeam backup).
What is the VPN firewall?
Available on request, the VPN firewall adds a private network layer between your VPS and the internet. It's useful if you want to restrict what traffic can reach your server directly. Contact support after ordering to enable it.
What is EDR and do I need it?
EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) is an active security layer that monitors your server for threats in real-time, including ransomware, malicious processes, and unauthorised changes. It's included on all managed (T-series) plans. On unmanaged plans, you'd manage security yourself or request it separately.
Managed vs unmanaged
What exactly does 'managed' mean?
On a managed plan, Technolutions engineers monitor your server 24/7, apply OS patches automatically, investigate security alerts, manage your firewall, and handle day-to-day server maintenance. You focus on running your business; we focus on keeping the server healthy.
Can I upgrade from unmanaged to managed later?
Yes. Contact our support team and they'll walk you through the upgrade process. Your data stays on the same infrastructure. It's a configuration change, not a migration.
I have in-house IT. Do I still need managed?
Not necessarily. Unmanaged gives your team full control. The only difference is that we won't proactively patch or monitor the OS layer. Your team takes responsibility for that. The hardware, network, replication, and Veeam backups are the same on both plans.
Billing and accounts
Where do I manage my account, invoices, and services?
Everything billing-related lives in WHMCS at billing.technolutions.co.za: invoices, service records, payment history, support tickets, and account settings.
What payment methods are accepted?
Payment options are displayed during checkout in WHMCS. These typically include EFT and card payments.
What happens if I want to cancel?
Log into your account at billing.technolutions.co.za, go to your service, and submit a cancellation request. Monthly plans aren't locked in and cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period.
